Students in grades 2-12 compete in an internationally recognized Robotics program called FIRST. Under the guidance of program Director Ms. Zaremba, they design, build and program a functioning robot and complete an in-depth research project for public presentation. The robot and project are used in borough, city and statewide competitions and are entirely student conceptualized and created. In 2008, St. Edmund placed 2nd in Robot Performance at the Brooklyn FLL Qualifiying match with their robot Chuck Norris, and was one of only a handful of Catholic schools across the city to compete. In 2009, The Nerd Herd and their robot "Thingamajig" took 1st Place in Robot Design at the Brooklyn Qualifying Tournament, and went on to earn the 1st Place Champions Award at the Regional Competition. The Herd won the privilege of traveling to Atlanta, Georgia to represent NYC in the FLL World Festival!

In 2010, the Herd was awarded the honor of the Champion's Award (First Place) at the Brooklyn FLL Qualifying Tournament. At the NYC Championships on March 14, 2010, the Nerd Herd earned a Research Trophy(3rd Place) It's truly an honor to once again be among the top teams in the city, and the Nerds would like to congratulate ALL of the teams who participated! High Fives around!

In 2010-11, St. Edmund expanded the program to include children from ages 9-18. Working with St. Edmund Prep, the Nerd Herd now includes an FTC team, and from within our school, came a Junior FLL team!

This year, 2011-12, the Nerd Herd is comprised of an FLL and and FTC team, and the tournament seasons are well under way! As the Nerd Herd prepares for the FLL Championship and FTC tournaments in March, we wish all the best to all other teams competing!
